Growning down OR Coming of Age…

For the seasoned live out loud geek what follows might come as a shock…

I, CC, am 31 years old and have never officially cosplayed. GASP…I know, but until recently, very recently I have enjoyed my geekdom in the comforts of my home and with my friend GiGi. I don’t think she would mind me speaking for her in saying that attending our first Con changed all of that.

It’s a story for another time but let’s just say that the largest part of my adulthood, so far, has been spent on being a chameleon. I’m not sure why (immaturity, inexperience, bad relationships) but I spent a lot of time trying to me anything but me. It wasn’t until I found massage therapy (my current career) that I began to open up and rediscover me. So in the months leading up to 30, I was arms wide open, ready for the best years of my life. At that time, I had no idea that would involve reconnecting with childhood CC.

I don’t think I have to go into detail here to relay how much fun it is to realize that you don’t grow out of the things that you truly love, you grow with them. As I mentioned in my bio, I grew up in an age of great cartoons, comics and movies that are now thought of as “classic”. In looking back at them one may see the campy and/or cheesy but recall the fondness and excitement of bonding with my brothers. For a few hours a week we weren’t fighting or ganging up on eachother. That legacy is one worth carrying on, right?

I am not a wife or mother but I do have nieces and nephews of whom I am hell bent consider me the coolest of relatives. They are very young now so I have time to hone my skills at passing the geek torch. One of them will be my protégé, I promise you that 🙂

So to bring this back home, I will be attempting cosplay for the first time at DragonCon 2014. Although I am in no way capable of making a red carpet worthy ensemble, I am going to attempt to make my own costumes. They are sketched, as best as I can at any rate, the patterns are purchased, and I can sew (enough to put them together). In order to keep the suspense going, I will not be posting the sketches until closer to the Con but will tell you that I have chosen 4 fandoms to create from:

Sherlock. The Hobbit. Doctor Who. Marvel.

I haven’t done an extensive amount of research, in fact, I largely went on what I saw at DragonCon to come up with a take on each of these that is new, exciting and hopefully inspiring. The only thing I hope at this point is that in my excitement to participate I didn’t set too lofty of a goal for myself. GiGi is excited and ready for us to contribute more personal photographs to the site and I do not want to let her down. Wish me luck my friends and please share your adventures in cosplaying if you have any!!

Thanks, as always, for lending me you ears ❤ CC
