Greetings fellow readers! I am thrilled that the time has come for me to review Deadly Curiosities!
As I have mentioned on numerous occasions, I am a huge fan Gail Z. Martin and while I am use to her epic fantasy stories, I was eager to see her take on urban fantasy. Deadly Curiosities did not disappoint!
Picture it, modern day Charleston, SC with all its old city charm. Historic houses turned into quaint B&B’s, carriage rides, a city market full of best local goods, antiques and stores passed down through the generations. Trifles and Folly is one such store. It’s owner Cassidy Kincaide, along with her good friend and assistant Teag, keep the locals and tourist alike outfitted in the finest of antiquities.
With day to day activities like walking her dog Baxter, stopping for a muffin and some coffee at the local café and/or ordering take out for dinner, you may think that Cassidy leads a normal/uneventful life…WRONG!
Cassidy happens to be a psychometric, which is someone who can read the strong emotions connected to objects and often visualizes memories. This makes her “job” a lot less mundane in that she is able to sift through pieces that are brought in and not re-sale anything that may bring a dwelling bad energy , as in objects with strong negative emotions/memories.
As you may have guessed, Teag also has a gift. He is a weaver of not only yarn but digital information. Between the two of them, they can usually track down any information needed to solve local “haunted object” mysteries. Charleston, as like most old cities, is known for being haunted and many a resident makes their money embellishing those stories.
It’s all in a days work for Cassidy and Teag, that is until a tall/thin/sinister man comes into town, mangled bodies start piling up and small trinkets become vessels of mass chaos.
As the supernatural s@#* hits the fan, Cassidy and Teag must seek help in the form of Sorren (a 400 year old vampire) and Lucinda (Voudon priestess).
Together they must figure out what is causing the uprising and unease of menacing spirits and how to stop it.
Deadly Curiosities is a thrilling read and will, page after page, have you wondering “just what does go on beyond what my eyes are seeing”. Cassidy and Teag are relatable characters with believable story lines that I would like to see more of!
I enjoyed the multi layered old school and new school techniques for attempting to vanquish a foe and will without a doubt be doing more research on those aspects of the book. Having been to Charleston, I found the story very very easy to get swept into and enjoy. It makes me want to go back, retrace my steps and see the magic along side the mystery of the city.
Gail hit it out of the park once again and I truly can’t wait to see what Cassidy, Teag, Sorren and Lucinda get into in the future (a sequel has already been requested and I believe Gail is working on it as I type).
