According to sources close to Variety, Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep is in early negotiations to join Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda in Disney’s ‘Mary Poppins Returns.’
She’s in talk to play the role of Poppins’ cousin, Topsy.
If the deal closes, Streep would reunite with ‘Into the Woods’ director Rob Marshall. actress Emily Blunt, and producers Marc Platt and John DeLuca. Streep and Blunt also worked together in ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’
Drawing from the wealth of material in P.L. Travers’ seven additional novels, the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
‘Mary Poppins Returns’ will be directed by Rob Marshall (Into The Woods). Marshall is producing with Marc Platt and John DeLuca. The screenplay will be written by David Magee (Finding Neverland), and will feature original songs and an all-new score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray).
