  On a Love Letter

“never underestimate the power of a well written letter”

This is a quote from one of my guilty pleasure movies The Jane Austen Book Club.

JABC

If you haven’t seen it and you don’t know much about Austen (where have you been ;)) letters are heavily used (even in the movies modern form) as a way of conveying affection, apologies and general intention.

***Let’s not forget in the 1st SITC movie, letters are what bring Carrie and Big back to eachother***
I’ve always been fond of letters because I feel like they have a way of stripping us down to what we are really trying to say…or if you are me, the words come out way WAY prettier than I might speak them.

In regards to a love letter, I feel especially partial. I am just plain ole not good at conveying romantic interest, leaving me almost always, a day late and a dollar short.
If such letters were as excitedly received as they were in Austen’s time, things may have been different (but that’s not what this post is about).

During a previous challenge by @NerdintheSand I took this topic and went in a fictional route with it. I imagined a character with which to bestow my fictional feelings and wrote a 5 page letter that, for the time period it was set in, would have been a hit!

This time, the continuation of that story didn’t seem to call me.
Instead the words from one of my top jams right now are on repeat…

“But she said, where’d you wanna go?
How much you wanna risk?
I’m not looking for somebody
With some superhuman gifts
Some superhero
Some fairytale bliss
Just something I can turn to
Somebody I can kiss”

I didn’t finish it because I don’t have my “something just like this” , yet, but I like the idea that in all of our fandom fantasies (and they are far, wide and diverse), that we aren’t really expecting perfection from that person, that we aren’t creating massive and almost impossible hoops to be jumped through.

****Fantasies can be realized together, after all 😉 😉 😉

As romantic as almost all of my fantasy notions can be, the reality is just a bit cooler and dare I say more romantic?

For example, I’ll pull from another song I am into right now…

I met you in the dark
You lit me up
You made me feel as though
I was enough
We danced the night away
We drank too much
I held your hair back when
You were throwing up

Then you smiled over your shoulder
For a minute I was stone-cold sober
I pulled you closer to my chest
And you asked me to stay over
I said, I already told you
I think that you should get some rest

I knew I loved you then
But you’d never know
‘Cause I played it cool when I was scared of letting go
I knew I needed you
But I never showed
But I wanna stay with you
Until we’re grey and old
Just say you won’t let go
Just say you won’t let go

I really like the image here of vulnerability. He’s helping her with a pretty embarrassing thing for a girl and when she’s well enough to look at him, she smiles, comfortable with him and he see’s his whole life with her!??? Incredibly romantic!
Ok sure, I am not glamorizing alcohol induced vomiting but hang with me here. These are two people in a situation where they either one could have run away from the other via annoyance or/or mortification and yet she’s able to do what she needs to do (with his help) and she can be at ease enough to smile…and the words going through his head aren’t “dude, I’m outta here” they are “you look beautiful than ever”. To me vulnerability is the kind of beauty that would make anyone “stone cold sober” for a moment.
There are a lot of other really beautiful images in this song

I wake you up with some breakfast in bed
I’ll bring you coffee
With a kiss on your head
And I’ll take the kids to school
Wave them goodbye
And I’ll thank my lucky stars for that night

When you looked over your shoulder
For a minute, I forget that I’m older
I wanna dance with you right now, oh
And you look as beautiful as ever
And I swear that every day you get better
You make me feel this way somehow

I’m so in love with you
And I hope you know
Darling, your love is more than worth its weight in gold
We’ve come so far my dear
Look how we’ve grown
And I wanna stay with you
Until we’re grey and old
Just say you won’t let go
Just say you won’t let go

I wanna live with you
Even when we’re ghosts
‘Cause you were always there for me
When I needed you most

I’m gonna love you ’til
My lungs give out
I promise till death we part
Like in our vows
So I wrote this song for you
Now everybody knows
That it’s just you and me
Until we’re grey and old
Just say you won’t let go
Just say you won’t let go

Just say you won’t let go
Oh, just say you won’t let go

but that one takes the cake for me…

The choosing to go through uncomfortable things, the comfort in one another, the acceptance, the simplicity of one look changing everything…
That’s my “something just like this”….the love letter I want to receive one day ❤
