The Monsters In Your Own Back Yard

By Gail Z. Martin

Every state has its own flavor of monsters. You’ve probably heard of the Jersey Devil, the Mothman, and Bigfoot. But the Squonk are one of Pennsylvania’s native creepy creatures, and while one of those is bad enough, you really don’t want to meet a were-squonk.

Fortunately, monster hunter Mark Wojcik takes on the monsters of Pennsylvania one silver bullet at a time. Were-squonks, fish creatures, swamp monsters, haunted hotels, demonic amusement parks—even the vengeful ghost of Revolutionary War general ‘Mad’ Anthony Wayne—Mark is on the job. He’s got a grenade launcher full of salted holy water, and he’s not afraid to use it!

Mark was a mechanic before a deer hunting trip went tragically wrong and a wendigo killed his father, brother, uncle and cousin. Mark survived, and his self-inflicted penance is to spend his nights and weekends hunting the things that go bump in the night to keep other families from losing the ones they love. He and Father Leo work with the Occulatum, a secret Vatican organization that fights demons and monsters. When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, Mark takes it on with extreme prejudice, plenty of ingenuity, and lots of snark. He’s a seat-of-the-pants kind of hero, making the world safe one cryptid at a time.

Spells Salt and Steel: Season One collects the first four Mark Wojcik novellas, so you can enjoy all the smart-assery and non-stop action in one book, packed full of freaky creatures, dark magic, and improvised heroics when mechanic and monster go mano-a-mano.

The Mark Wojcik books are part of the BubbaVerse, the expanded universe of stories based on the Bubba the Monster Hunter series by John Hartness. Mark is also a crossover character in my Deadly Curiosities urban fantasy series, and in my Morgan Brice urban fantasy MM paranormal romance Badlands, Witchbane and Treasure Trail series. I figure monster hunting is a relatively small world, and paths cross!

Night Moves, the fifth novella in the Spells Salt and Steel series, will be out in July from Falstaff Books.

I co-write the Spells Salt and Steel series with my husband and writing partner Larry N. Martin. Watch for even more spooky shenanigans and creepy cryptids as Season Two rolls out!

You can find Spells Salt and Steel in ebook, paperback and Audible audiobook wherever online books are sold!
